Projects which used Forterra’s bricks were recognised at the prestigious Brick Development Agency (BDA) Awards 2018, with a major category win for one of our clients and a commendation for another.
Countryside Properites was awarded the prestigious Bricks Awards’ Best Large Housebuilder award for its Horsted Park, Chatham, and Foundry Gardens, Haywards Heath, developments, both of which utilised Forterra’s Ecostock Chelsea Smoked Red bricks.
A spokesperson from Countryside Properties said, “We are very proud to win this award, based on our work alongside Clague Architecture and brick supplier, Forterra, in creating two fantastic new communities at Horsted Park and Foundry Gardens.”
Christopher Sherlock-Scougall, Associate Architect at Clague Architecture, who worked on Countryside Properties’ Horsted Phase II development, said: “Horsted has been a fantastic scheme, and we’re thrilled that Countryside Properties has been awarded Best Large Housebuilder after putting the development forward to the BDA’s Brick Awards.
“The brick selection and detailing takes its cue from the architecture of Rochester but has been reinterpreted to create a contemporary looking scheme that sits comfortably with its surrounding as well as creating a unique sense of place.
“As part of this, we developed a diaper brick pattern for the frontage of the homes, based on the Victorian idea of cross patterns to break up the frontage of buildings. Forterra’s Chelsea Smoked Red bricks were ideal for this, and complement the local vernacular very well.”
In the Urban Generation category, Cunninghame Housing Association’s Carmichael Court in Ayreshire was commended. This project, designed by MAST Architects, utilised Forterra’s Belgravia Gault Blend bricks to great effect.
Stephen Harrison, Chief Executive of Forterra, who attended the Awards in person, said: “I’m delighted that our clients Countryside Properties have been named best Large Housebuilder at the 2018 BDA Awards. Their Heywards Heath and Horsted developments used our bricks to create exemplary new homes which deserved the judges’ recognition.
“We’re also pleased that the Carmichael Court project, which showcased our Belgravia Gault Blend, was commended in the Urban Regeneration category, and I’d like to congratulate Cunninghame Housing Association and MAST Architects for the recognition of their work.
“Projects such as these reinforce why bricks continue to be the nation’s favourite building product, thanks to their versatility, durability and the vast range of standard and bespoke brick types available from manufacturers such as ourselves.”
