Choosing a mortar colour
Using a coloured mortar can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of brickwork.
The images above illustrate the extent to which the colour of the mortar can change the appearance of brickwork. The bricks on the left are exactly the same as those on the right - only the mortar colour differs.
The image opposite shows how dramatic patterns can be created by using different mortar colours. The pattern you see in the photo below is actually created by the mortar, yet it gives the illusion that it has been created with different coloured bricks.
This effect is created using different mortar colours. The brickwork is built using just one brick type.
Around 15% of the area of a wall is made up of mortar, so it's not surprising that using different coloured mortars can have such an effect.
Different coloured mortars are created using a combination of coloured sands and cements, or ready mixed coloured mortars.
It is well worth making a careful choice as to both the colour and style of the mortar joints as they can truly enhance the effect of your carefully chosen bricks. Incorrect mortar choice will have a detrimental effect on the appearance of your brickwork, even if you have chosen expensive handmade bricks.
When matching existing brickwork for an extension or renovation project, matching the mortar and mortar joint is as important as matching the brick.
