This is a common phenomenon in blue bricks known as ‘peacocking’. It is caused by a mild reaction between the mortar and the brick and is generally only visible on smooth blue bricks. It is considered to be a natural characteristic of blue bricks but its appearance can be minimised by protecting the brickwork from heavy rainfall during construction and incorporating good design details within the structure.
