Garden walls are one of the most basic uses of brickwork, but an area where incorrect detailing is in place can lead to major problems in the long run.
Garden Wall Bricks - Laying The Foundations
First, a decent foundation is required. Then a type 2 DPC brick (Class B engineering) should be used up to at least two courses above ground level.
The wall itself should be ideally built from F2 facing bricks such as those produced by Forterra. These offer a combination of excellent aesthetic appeal along with a high level of durability. Forterra’s Original London Fletton bricks are also suited to garden walls when constructed in accordance with these instructions.
Finally, the wall should be finished with a coping that overhangs the brickwork by at least 45mm on either side and incorporates a drip detail to shed rain water run-off clear of the wall, similar to that of a window sill.
